Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
Is it worth it to submit a resume to an organization’s generic talent pool?
Have you ever reviewed a target employer’s job board to find that while they’re not hiring for your dream role, they instead invite candidates to submit resumes for future consideration? I recently received a question from someone wondering if recruiters actually review these submissions and if it’s worth a candidate’s time to submit their materials. Here’s my answer:
Many organizations maintain an active talent community, a general or specialized pipeline of candidates that recruiters may review for future openings. This is such a strategic way for employers to find interested talent for their available roles, but I can't speak to how often recruiters at every organization leverage this tool. If you’re wondering whether you should bother submitting your resume to a talent community, here are some considerations:
- Know your target role before submitting and ensure that your resume clearly demonstrates your qualifications and capacity to perform that role. For example, if you’re currently a teacher with an instruction-focused resume, but your hope is to move into an entry-level operations position, an organization isn’t going to immediately connect those dots for you. In this example, this person would want to highlight events they’d planned, projects they’ve managed, budgets they’ve worked with, and tools they use to organize their work and the work of others (like excel, google sheets, salesforce, Asana, etc.).
- Assume you’ll still need to check this organization’s website often for aligned roles - just because an organization has your resume doesn’t mean they are looking at it every time they have an opening.
- When possible, focus on building relationships with strategic people at your target orgs. Examples can include the hiring manager of your target team or a recruiter (and bonus points for finding the recruiter who specializes in hiring for your target team). Relationship-building can be as simple as reaching out via email or LinkedIn to say you understand they're not currently hiring, but if they're open to a quick convo you'd love to learn more about their org, your roles of interest, and if they envisioning opening up your target roles in the near future.
During my recruitment years, I casually reviewed talent pools and frequently engaged in short informational calls with candidates who reached out to me directly. Think of the talent pool as one strategy versus THE strategy.
