Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Accepting a new job, with a new employer, is exciting! Just like an organization is vetting you, you should also vet the employer. Here are some strategies:
- Research the organization. What comes up when you search them in google?
- Follow the organization on their social media pages. What do they post, and how do their followers engage in the comments?
- Ask your network for intel. Does anyone you know have prior experience working at this organization, or partnering with them on an initiative. If not, can they connect you with someone who has that context?
- Ask the hiring manager if they’re open to connecting you with your future teammates for an informational call before you accept. Share that as you’re finalizing your decision, you’d appreciate the opportunity to chat with current staff about their own experience at the organization and on that team.
- Read company reviews on Glassdoor and Google, but proceed at your own risk - you’ll usually find extreme opinions versus a reflection of the average experience. These reviews can inform but should not define your opinion.
- Engage in a frank conversation with the hiring manager! If there are questions on your mind that still remain unanswered, ask.
Landing a new job is exciting, but that doesn’t mean you should immediately accept. Spend time vetting an organization throughout your process, and in the days following your offer. Your future self will thank you!
