Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
Do I need to send a thank you card?
Here’s a topic that is on theme during this season of gratitude - do you need to write a thank you card after an interview? Here’s my answer:
Thank you cards are mostly a relic of the past, like faxing in or mailing a resume to your target employer of choice. Most hiring decisions are made soon after a final interview, and they are based on the content of your interview answers, hiring activities, and reference checks. I would never lose sleep over a thank you card or email! Throughout my career in recruiting and hiring, I’ve probably received less than 10 physical cards (and have made hundreds of job offers - do the math on whether or not a card made the difference!).
A thank you email, sent within hours of an interview (when final decisions are being made), can be an opportunity for candidates to reiterate their interest in joining that particular team. They’ll probably make the interviewer smile, but likely won’t change their thinking. If you do plan on sending a thank you email, get specific about topics you discussed that left you energized or clarify something that you feel you didn’t make clear at the time of your interview.
