How To Set Effective New Year’s Goals For 2022

and yourself, up for success.

Get Rid of Performance Reviews

Goal setting this time of year often means performance reviews. In this article, former employment attorney and author Jathan Janove makes the case for doing away with typical performance reviews in place of a more holistic approach to evaluation.

How Effective Goal-setting Motivates Employees

The purpose of a goal is to provide direction and motivate employees to reach a certain level. However, if goals are confusing or stressful, they are doing more harm than good. Effective goals are adaptive and involve employees every step along the way.

Asking Employer For Their References

I’ve recently seen a few viral tweets about job seekers asking hiring managers to provide references of people they currently/previously manage when considering an offer. I LOVE this strategy! This is a great opportunity to learn more about your potential team and your manager’s working style. The way a hiring manager responds to your request will also be very telling as you are making a decision about whether or not to accept an offer. Here’s a couple strategies you can use to thoughtfully ask a hiring manager to provide their own references:

  • You can ask for a hiring manager’s references at the same time that they ask you for yours. You can respond like this: “I’m happy to provide my references. I’d also love to learn more about your working/management style - can you connect me with a couple of the folks currently on your team, or who you’ve managed in the past?”
  • You can wait until after you receive an offer. You can respond like this: “Thank you so much for extending me an offer. As I’m making my decision, I’d love to speak with a few of the current people on the team, especially those you currently or have previously managed. Can you provide me with their information or connect us?”

If you’re able to connect with the current team, great! I encourage you to ask them about their experiences on the team, both strengths and pain points. Also ask about the hiring manager’s working style and what you might expect in terms of how they might coach you, provide feedback, check-in, etc.

If you get pushback from the manager about sharing their own references, it’s also an interesting way to learn more. Do they push back because their team is overwhelmed (as a result of being understaffed - hence your opening) and they don’t want to add “extra work”, or do they simply say that it won’t be possible? Get curious.
