Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

How to respond if you’ve been ghosted (by an employer)

Let’s say you applied for a job, scheduled a time to meet with a recruiter or hiring manager, and when the time comes from your call the recruiter/hiring manager doesn’t show up (to the scheduled zoom, or they don’t call you at the confirmed time). You wait several minutes, even send an email, and still don’t get a response. This has happened to me! What does it mean and what should you do?

First of all, don’t panic. Check your email and confirm you truly have the correct day/time. If you have indeed confirmed this was the right day/time, assume the best of the employer. People have emergencies - car accidents, emergency vet appointments, sick kids need to be picked up from school, etc. Even in non-emergency situations, meetings run late and people lose track of time. It truly happens to the best of us!

With that in-mind, send a gentle email to the person who coordinated your meeting time to share that you hope everyone is ok, and that you’re still very much looking forward to connecting. Ask when you can reschedule the call. If you’ve had previous conversations with others at the company, like a recruiter or another team member, consider copying them so everyone is in the loop (just make sure the language doesn’t appear as though you are “tattling” on their colleague).

If you still don’t get a response within 2-3 days, it can mean a variety of things. The employer might no longer be interested (though they should have absolutely communicated with you proactively), or perhaps they aren’t as organized as they should be and simply missed the time. Know that if you have done your due diligence - followed up in an empathetic and professional way - you’ve done all you probably need to do. I wouldn’t dedicate all my job seeking energy to following up with an employer who both misses a scheduled call and doesn’t respond to your follow-up email within a few days unless you receive additional context about the situation.
