What We’re Reading Right Now
|
What if trust wasn't just hoped for, but intentionally built? Leadership consultant Steph Llano's framework shows how five deliberate behaviors: connecting authentically, creating psychological safety, following through, communicating clearly, and celebrating progress, can transform workplace relationships by treating trust as a learnable skill rather than a lucky accident.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
I’m interviewing with a headhunter who is hiring for roles at many organizations. Is it ok to ask them about their other roles at the end of our interview?
|
|
|
Headhunters, also known as recruiters or executive recruiters, provide external talent acquisition support to organizations (this is one of the many supports provided by my wonderful colleagues here at WorkTogether Talent Consulting). They likely represent several employers and roles at once. A client of mine recently asked, “I have an interview this week with a headhunter/exec recruiter for a specific position with an organization. Is it ok for me to ask them about the other organizations and roles they’re supporting during our call?”
In my opinion, not outright, but I’ll share tips for what to do instead!
When a recruiter reaches out to you about a particular opportunity, they are laser focused on filling that role, for that employer. In fact, their compensation depends on it! It is their job to present candidates to an employer client that they believe are highly qualified AND interested in accepting should the role/team/org/offer align with their needs. By explicitly asking about other employers/opportunities in an interview for a particular employer/role, you are conveying that you are not that interested (even if you are!). You might think that these external recruiters are interested in filling any position, versus that particular role, but by sharing too much openness about any particular employer you may accidentally convey a lack of interest and focus overall.
Here is when it does make sense to ask an executive recruiter about all the roles/employers they are supporting:
- If they bring it up proactively (i.e. “As an FYI, I partner with many employers throughout the year. Would you be interested in hearing about other opportunities?”).
- If you are connecting with them about opportunities in general, versus an interview for a particular position.
- If you are ultimately rejected for that particular position, you can always ask if there are other roles that might be a fit or the best ways to stay in touch about future matches.
- And if you choose to bring it up in an interview, here’s a tactful way to ask: "Should this opportunity not work out, could we connect again to discuss other opportunities?" or "I'm really stoked to learn more about the role and organization as I navigate this process with you! If this opportunity doesn't work out, how can I stay in touch?”
If you are simply reconnecting with a recruiter or having a more informal/informational call, feel free to ask about all the opportunities. The same is true if you are speaking to a recruiter from a staffing agency, though few employers in the education space partner with these types of recruiters (they tend to fill temporary and contract positions, often very technical ones, versus the kind of roles that tend to exist within education and nonprofit organizations.).
