Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Red Flags in Hiring Process
Have you ever accepted a job offer that you had a gut feeling wouldn’t work out, and ended up quitting shortly after starting because your gut feeling was confirmed? Your interviewing process allows you to gather insights about an employer’s culture and what you can expect once you work there. You can’t see into the future, but here are some red flags to look out for in the hiring process:
- The hiring manager no-shows interviews or is late without explanation/remorse.
- Communication is inconsistent or you spend days waiting for responses to your questions.
- The hiring manager responds negatively when you negotiate your offer.
- The scope of the role is vague/continues changing throughout your interview process.
- The hiring process moves slowly and/or the hiring manager consistently does not meet agreed upon deadlines (i.e. does not update you on your status during the promised windows and also doesn’t update you to share that there’s a delay - basically, you’re constantly left wondering if you need to reach out instead).
- When you ask to speak to current employees/future teammates after receiving an offer, you are denied.
It’s important to note that when you have limited options and need to ensure a stable paycheck/benefits, you might not be in a position to decline a role because of red flags in the hiring process.
That was certainly the experience of several of my clients in the early months of the pandemic, when many organizations were terminating employees and few organizations were hiring. Sometimes, red flags are also just a reflection of an inexperienced hiring manager, who, with proper coaching from their managers or talent acquisition professionals, might operate differently in the future (I’ve witnessed this many times!). I always encourage job seekers to thought partner with people in their life whom they trust, and to reflect on their own needs and job non-negotiables.
