Working Remotely for the First Time? Here Are 5 Tips From Our All-Remote Team

In the wake of COVID-19, people are taking extraordinary measures to curb its spread. One striking change for many people is suddenly finding themselves working remotely, and often in close quarters with young children, partners, and other family members. As these strange times bring new challenges, we wanted to take a moment to share some helpful tips and words of encouragement on how to navigate your new virtual work environment.

13 Tips and Tricks for Working Remotely and Loving It

Working remotely sounds like a dream come true for a lot of people. No office politics, working in your PJs, taking an afternoon break for a yoga class, or even working on vacation. Perfect, right? The truth is that remote work is not necessarily as straightforward and breezy as outsiders sometimes think. Since you usually don’t have a boss looking over your shoulder to make sure you’re working—and the lines between “home” and “office” can get pretty blurred— remote work can be more challenging to get right than a typical desk job. Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

A few readers have recently reached out to me to investigate strategies for avoiding bias or discrimination in their job search. While it is your job to position your skills and experience for the roles you desire, an employer's bias is not your responsibility. I repeat, it is NOT your responsibility. Instead, I'd like to provide you with guidance on how to find organizations where you can thrive because of who you are and the value you bring.

1. Get to know an organization through its website and social media channels. It's a reliable way to study what the company is trying to convey about their organization's culture, beliefs, and priorities.

2. Go deeper. Reach out to current and former staff you know personally, or connect with them on LinkedIn to learn about their experience working at the organization.

3. Instead of asking yourself, "Will I fit in here?" ask, "Will I be happy here and have the freedom to be my authentic self while contributing to the corporate culture?"

4. Minimize distractions on your resume so that you can highlight your areas of expertise and relevant experience. Remove objective statements, graduation dates, experience from 15+ years ago, and the "Interests" section.

5. When interviewing, prepare questions that will allow you to learn more about an organization's culture and a supervisor's management style. You might ask: "Based on my review of your website, I see that [name of org] is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In your experience, what does that look like in practice on this team and in the broader organization?"

You might be casting a wider net these days in your job search as a result of COVID-19, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't prioritize finding an organization that values what you bring to the table versus how you might fit in. Need a thought partner on your job-search planning, or an expert to help you revise your job-seeking tool kit? Our team can help!
