Good intentions are great! But nonprofit culture requires strategic systems change, not just messaging. This practical guide shows leaders how to move from surface fixes like wellness apps to structural changes like transparent feedback loops and meaningful career pathways that actually retain talent and build authentic engagement.
Why do well-intentioned culture initiatives often fall flat? It's not because leaders don't care! Actually, culture fails because they focus on messaging instead of systems. Authentic culture change requires leaders to shift power, take personal risks, and model behaviors consistently rather than launching campaigns and hoping for the best.

What We’re Reading Right Now
Forget job hopping - "job hugging" is the new trend! Employees are staying put in current roles, with Gen Z showing the highest intent to remain where they are. This shift creates a golden opportunity for leaders to invest in retention strategies and develop existing talent instead of chasing external hires.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

All the advice online suggests I include a “key competencies” section on my resume. Is that sound advice?
About half the resumes I review have a section which drives me bonkers, and it’s “key competencies”. Resume real estate is precious. Even if we’re done with arbitrary rules about resume length, what you include on a resume still matters.
To me, listing key competencies like “performance management,” “team culture,” “strategic planning,” etc. add ZERO value. You’re listing skills without any proof points, and just expecting the reader to take your word that these competencies are strengths. In my experience, the same folks who insert a key competencies section rarely reference those skills again or provide relevant metrics throughout the document. This is a missed opportunity.
If your goal is to elevate a few key skills that are super aligned to your target roles, and want to make sure they are front and center for a hiring manager, here are some different strategies:
- Include a headline under your name: “K-12 Strategy and Talent Director”. This works because you are orienting the reader with how you’d like them to view you as a candidate (your industry, functional expertise, and level of seniority), and it’s more focused as opposed to listing 20+ random key competencies which may not align with each other.
- Include 4 bullets under your headline which provide career highlights aligned to your headline. This could include the years of experience you have as a K-12 Strategy and Talent Director and a few big accomplishments related to driving org-wide strategy and talent initiatives for recent employers. *I prefer bullets over a paragraph with an executive summary - it’s easier to read and allows you to focus on substance (actual work history versus generic sentiments).
- And most importantly, insert plenty of examples of those key competencies in action within your experience section! Include a bullet about the 3-year strategic planning process you led for your team, and the work you did to align executive leaders and board members around common goals. Include a bullet about how you addressed a toxic team culture and low employee attrition through intentional changes to performance management strategy and team-building strategy. Share data points that show related results, like retention, promotions, engagement scores, etc.
