Youth who had been formerly incarcerated share their experiences and why participatory reform is possible. We loved reading about youth elevating their voices and empowering others to do the same.

What WorkMonger is reading right now.

COVID-19 exacerbated existing inequities. While we know the long-term impact exists, the outcomes do not need to be detrimental. It’s time we create education reform that is specifically aimed at eliminating the school to prison pipeline so students can be in the classroom.

How to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself” in a Job Interview
Ever wondered how to answer the “So tell me a little bit about yourself” question that usually kicks off a job interview? It’s helpful to first understand the purpose of that question. The interviewer is likely doing the following:
- Breaking the ice. Interviews can be awkward, and talking about your greatest area of expertise (YOU!) is an easy way to warm up.
- Buying some time to quickly review your resume while you talk
- Ensuring alignment between your motivations, professional experience, and areas of interest and the role/organization.
Your ideal answer is short, and you’ll want to focus on your professional bio versus emphasizing too much about your personal bio and hobbies (i.e. your marital status, how many siblings you have, etc.). This can minimize hiring bias and help you stay focused in your answer. Though you’ll want to stick to professional facts (i.e. your professional experience), in mission-driven work it is important to share your WHY (i.e. the role education played in your life, and how it has inspired you to do this work today). Here’s a framework that can help:
- Your professional expertise and how your work has evolved over the years: “I’m an instructional leader who started her career as a teacher, taking on increasing leadership roles over the years prior to becoming a curriculum director”
- The work that brings you joy: “I’m at my best when I’m in school buildings, working with teachers and other instructional leaders to revamp lessons, identify strengths and gaps, and utilizing data to make strategic decisions”)
- Your WHY: “I moved around a lot growing up, but school was my constant. Even in new cities, I felt at home in the classroom. I started my career in corporate America, but never felt fulfilled. I volunteered through a program called Junior Achievement and realized I was in the wrong field. When I transitioned to Education, I felt at home again. I want to create that kind of enriching, safe space for all kids and adults who work in school buildings.”
- Connect back to the role: “As I reflect on how I want to spend my time moving forward, it’s making an even bigger impact. Instead of just working with one school, I’d like to work across an entire district to affect change. I love the way your district approaches Academics, ensuring that district leaders still spend time on the ground and working directly with teachers. I see so much alignment between your mission and my own commitment to creating enriching and inclusive spaces for all learners.”
