Should jobseekers invest in a LinkedIn premium account? Not necessarily. A LinkedIn premium account allows users to conduct extensive searches for other users (like recruiters, hiring managers, and other professionals at your target employers), and send them direct messages (InMails). Though it’s definitely handy to have access to those features, sending personalized connection requests can be just as effective AND it’s free. Talent folks (like me!) receive a large number of daily LinkedIn requests, and I can tell you that less than 10% of those are personalized. Here are a couple of templates for reaching out to recruiters via a free connection request:
Why these messages work: They are personalized and specific without making big asks (like asking for an interview, or advice). They also demonstrate networking savvy.
