Why do job applications ask for my LinkedIn url?

Have you noticed that more and more job applications ask for you to include your LinkedIn url? Here are some reasons why:

  • A LinkedIn profile is a more authentic way to introduce yourself to hiring managers - you have space to include featured news stories or websites, write a lengthy “About” section, show recommendations and endorsements from former colleagues, etc. It’s possible that a hiring manager is hoping to learn more about you than what’s typically included in a resume or cover letter.
  • A hiring manager wants to make sure that all your materials add up. Is there a mismatch between what you indicate on your resume and LinkedIn? Did you fail to include roles/experiences that are relevant to the job you’re applying to? Your goal is consistency, even if the information is presented with different language or examples.
  • References. A hiring manager may want to see if you know people in common, and reach out to mutual connections.

With that in mind, it’s a great idea to ensure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date and that the information matches your resume (especially past employers, scope of your role, and dates of employment). In addition, make sure that you are communicating aligned career goals on your LinkedIn as the job you’ve applied for (i.e. if you’re applying for an assistant principal position, but your LinkedIn says your goal is to leave education and work in graphic design, that’s a flag for the hiring manager).
