Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
It’s a new year, and a great time to audit your resume to ensure it’s ready for prime time (whether or not you’re actively looking for a new role!):
- Include a headline for yourself! Examples might include: Educator, Instructional Leader, Fundraising Director, School Operations Manager, Program Officer, School Systems Leader, Human Resources Director, Education Policy Analyst, etc.
- Remove outdated information: your home address (city and state are fine), an objective statement (use a value proposition statement instead, or nothing at all), and skills that are no longer relevant to your desired positions (for example - lesson planning if you’re not applying for a teaching/ instructional/ school leadership role).
- Do you start bullet points with the phrase: “Responsible for”? Use action verbs instead to describe the value you added for each of your responsibilities (i.e. Increased student enrollment by 4%...”.
- If you have more than 10 years of experience, consider condensing your older roles into a short additional experience section, simply listing the job titles, employer, and years of work (and remove the bullets which take up space).
- Remove graduation dates and GPA from your Education section (unless you are a recent graduate), and ensure your relevant training/certifications are up-to-date.
