Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

It probably won’t come as a surprise that many mission-driven professionals volunteer their free time in the community. Volunteering is an excellent way to give back, connect, gain skills, and even fill unemployment gaps on your resume. Here are some suggestions for including volunteer work on your resume:

  • If you are involved in many ongoing volunteer initiatives, consider including a “Volunteer & Community Engagement” section on your resume.

  • If your volunteer role is quite substantial and relevant to your career path/desired new roles, consider including it in your Experience section.

  • Instead of listing your role title as “Volunteer,” consider the job function (i.e. Community Engagement Specialist), and indicate that you worked there in a volunteer capacity in the bullets describing your role/achievements.

  • Read the room. Like many Americans, you may be volunteering for a political campaign right now - use your best judgement about whether or not to reveal the candidate or party based on what you know about your industry or target audience.
