Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

A friend of mine recently reached out to me to discuss her plan for pivoting careers. After over a decade in the classroom, she’s ready to transition to the nonprofit or corporate sector but curious about salary ranges prior to applying for new roles. Here’s how I advised her to learn more about salaries for her target role or organization:

  • Start with currently posted job descriptions, where salary is sometimes listed (usually under a “compensation” or “benefits” section).

  • You can google salary ranges for job titles, like “data analyst,” but those ranges can be inaccurate.

  • Reach out to people you know who work at that organization or in that field and ask. If, like my friend, you’re nervous about discussing salary, use this language:

    • “I’m exploring a transition to [insert new career field]. Can you give me a sense of the salary ranges I should expect for those kinds of roles at your organization or similar organizations?

  • Schedule an informational call with a recruiter at your target organization. Ask questions about the role, organization, and application process. You can inquire about salary with this language: “I didn’t see it listed on the job description. Can you share the budgeted salary range for this position?”
