Weekly Resource

If you want to attract the most talented people, include these 7 things in your job description

The myth of the "purple squirrel" candidate, impossibly perfect and rare, harms both employer brands and hiring processes. Instead of chasing unattainable ideals, this article emphasizes crafting inclusive job descriptions that focus on core competencies, growth potential, and accessibility. By prioritizing realistic requirements and using growth-mindset language, organizations can attract diverse, capable candidates eager to grow into roles. Emphasizing values like DEIB and offering opportunities for development not only broadens the talent pool but also strengthens employee engagement. Transform your hiring strategy by building job descriptions that inspire and include.

Maximizing Reverse Reference Checks

Recruiting is in full swing for roles in education, and you might find yourself nearing the end of a process or evaluating an offer. Before accepting, make sure to conduct some reverse reference checks!
Reverse reference checks involve the job-seeker reaching out to current or former staff to hopefully gain an unfiltered, first-hand understanding of the role/team/organization.

These conversations are as useful as you make them, either affirming things you’re already excited about, or clarifying things that feel nebulous or concerning. Some organizations may proactively connect you with current staff, but you may have to find people on your own.
If you haven’t been connected to current/former staff, here’s what you can try:

•  If you’re at the offer stage, ask the hiring manager to connect you with a few of your future teammates so you can learn more about their experience prior to making a decision (how they respond to this request can be insightful as well!).
•  Ask your network if they know anyone currently employed by your target organization, or a former employee.
•  Leverage LinkedIn to search for current employees - especially if it’s a small org, simply visit the company page and then review profiles in the “people” tab. Instead of messaging everyone, strategically select those who may be on your target team.

Here’s some sample language:

“Hello, Name!
I’m considering joining [insert name of organization], and am hoping to connect with a few current employees as I make my final decision. Are you open to sharing more about your own experience and answering some of my questions about the organization?
I appreciate your time and consideration.”
