Best practices for job-searching in 2026
|
|
|
I’ve had several calls with clients in the last few weeks who are wondering which job-search strategies are working in 2026. Nothing is full-proof, but my clients with the most success are doing the following:
- They are clarifying their personal value proposition and target roles, industry.
- They are Identifying roles as safety, target, and reach (i.e. jobs you are overqualified for, jobs you are 100% qualified for, and jobs that would be a promotion). You should spend the majority of your time applying for safety and target. Because there are so many talented folks on the job market right now, employers have their pick of highly qualified candidates who already have the EXACT experience they need - employers don’t need to take a chance on someone who could perform with some coaching.
- They are auditing their resume and linkedin profile to ensure they are rich in data and clearly demonstrate qualifications for their target role and industry.
- They are making time daily to find job postings on both company career pages and a variety of job boards (check out TrulyHired).
- They are applying within 24-48 hours of seeing a job posting.
- They are tracking everything they apply to - this way, they can identify trends in any bottlenecks in their process.
- After applying for a role, they are verifying if they have any contacts at that organization and kindly asking if they’re open to flagging their name for the hiring manager or making a referral.
- They are letting their network know they are looking - sending them a resume and context about the kinds of roles they’re seeking, and asking if they’re aware of opportunities.
- They aren’t letting ego get in the way of finding a job. They are applying for roles in less desirable (to them***) industries, or with job titles that appear less senior than they prefer. Job titles aren’t always reflective of the seniority or scope of a role (for example, an executive assistant to the President may be the same as a Chief of Staff at a small nonprofit).
- They are leveraging AI to prepare for interviews and quickly update their resumes before applying for roles.
