One thing I've noticed about leadership is that the first thing to disappear when we're busy isn't effort—it's reflection.
Our calendars fill with meetings. Our inboxes fill with emails. Our days become a series of decisions, conversations, and deadlines.
Thinking rarely gets scheduled.
That's one of the things I appreciate about summer. Even though many education leaders are just as busy as they are during the school year, the rhythm is different. There are moments—however brief—to step back from what's immediately in front of us and think more strategically about what's ahead.
What assumptions deserve to be challenged? What problems are we trying to solve? Are we spending our time on the work that matters most?
Reflection isn't a luxury. It's part of leadership.
As the pace of the school year begins to build again over the coming weeks, I hope you find time to protect a little space for it. Some of our best decisions aren't made when we're moving the fastest—they're made when we've created enough margin to think clearly.
Together,
John
P.S. The same is true for your career. If you've been considering a future transition, don't wait until you're ready to apply for your next role. Use the quieter rhythm of summer to reflect on where you want to grow next. The best career moves usually begin long before a résumé is updated.

Measuring retention reveals organizational health. This guide covers the retention rate formula, how to calculate regrettable losses (high performers you wanted to keep), industry benchmarks, and what your numbers actually mean. Strong retention starts with respect, recognition, and reward. Mid-year is the perfect time to assess outcomes and course-correct.

Mindsets to help you stay resilient during a long job search

Many exceptional job-seekers are finding that job-searching in 2026 is harder and taking longer than they expected. So many factors influence this, from funding instability in the nonprofit space, more candidates exploring remote roles at a time when fewer are posted, and risk aversion from hiring managers and employees alike (hiring managers less likely to take a bet on new talent, and employees more likely to stay in roles they may have left in previous job markets). Here are some strategies and mindsets to employ when this job search is draining your energy and resiliency:
- It's not you, it's the market. When you are applying for roles for which you are highly qualified, the challenges you experience are a reflection of the fact that many talented people are vying for the same few opportunities. This job search will likely take longer than you planned or have experienced previously.
- When the only benchmark of success is a job offer, it's natural to feel unsuccessful until you meet that benchmark. Instead, I suggest creating smaller goals within your control: the number of new connections you make, networking events you attend, applications submitted, and hours per week dedicated to job searching (breaking it down into sections like applying, researching roles/companies, etc).
- Use your experience thus far to reflect on what is working or not working. If you have been intentional about pivoting (or boomerang-ing) to a new industry and you’re not receiving positive feedback, this could reflect the market not allowing for someone to pivot or boomerang when there are folks with the exact experience the hiring manager seeks already applying. This can inform what you apply to instead or in addition.
- Consider what is bringing you energy during this time or what you've wanted to make time for: could it be more time exercising, spending time with family/friends/loved ones, learning a new skill, etc? Job-searching doesn't have to be the headline of your life right now, although it is a priority. The headline might be that you learned to play an instrument in your spare time or volunteered at a school in the community. Giving back and/or to yourself can refuel you.
- Seek community. There are many people in your situation who can offer advice, empathy, and affirmation. Spend time with people who uplift vs drain your spirits and energy.
- I'm a big proponent of therapy! And if you haven't worked with a therapist before, finding someone who specializes in career-driven, successful women can be so helpful.
