5 Ways To Cope And Overcome Uncertainty And Focus On Mental Health During a Crisis - Leaders In Education - May 4th

Mindfulness and Compassion

In this edition of Leaders in Education, we will be focusing on mindfulness and compassion efforts, research, interventions, stories, and best practices for non-teaching professionals.

Five Ways Mindfulness Can Support Educators During a Crisis

We are all grappling with an unprecedented environment these days. As we search for ways to navigate this often challenging new context, it’s been encouraging to see that professionals across the education field are increasingly exploring mindfulness. There are many different types of contemplative practice, from mind-body practices like breathing techniques, yoga, mindful eating, and stillness practices like silent meditation. There is something for everyone to try. Here are five ways to start.

Education Matters: Managing Mental Health During a Pandemic

Before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of schools and made playgrounds off-limits, students were already experiencing mental health issues such as depression. With the COVID-19 outbreak, there is a greater need for mental health resources and coping practices. Students are worried about school, and parents are concerned about job loss or simply putting food on the table. It’s a stressful time for families. This article will discuss the importance and implementation of mental health best practices during a pandemic.

Care For The Caregiver: Guidelines For Administrators and Crisis Teams

Following a crisis, teachers provide additional support to the students in their classes. Also, crisis responders, school administrators, and mental health professionals offer crisis intervention and other mental health support to the school community following a crisis event. It is essential for caregivers to monitor their reactions and take care of their own needs, as failure to do so can result in stress and burnout. Here are a few helpful guidelines for administrators and crisis teams amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Why Early Childhood Educators Should Turn to Mindfulness and Compassion, Now and Always

Though research examining the potential benefits of mindfulness and compassion among early childhood professionals is in its infancy, studies point to promising results when implementing mindfulness-based interventions with K-12 teachers, including improvements in health, emotion regulation, relationship and work satisfaction, as well as reduced stress and improved care for children. Explore this article to learn more about the experience of early childhood professionals practicing mindfulness and compassion in their everyday work.

As We Rebuild, Here’s The Part We Can’t Afford To Take Out

The coronavirus pandemic gives us a chance to think anew as a social impact sector and as a nation about the future we want to pass along. This is our once in a 100-year opportunity. But just because we have a once-in-a-lifetime chance, it does not mean we will necessarily seize it. In our fixation on grades and achievement, we have too often left out the most important “part” of what it takes to build a better future for our children. Explore ways we can rebuild thoughtfully in this article.

 Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

I'm a big proponent of reaching out to decision-makers at your dream organizations before you apply to jobs. It’s a great way to expand your network, learn more about a role before applying, and build a relationship with a hiring manager or recruiter. But these days, even the most well-intentioned folks at your dream organizations might not be able to carve out 15 minutes to chat with you. And that’s understandable. These are not normal times.

So what does that mean for your job search approach?

  • You should still send emails and LinkedIn messages to connect with gatekeepers (I shared an excellent template for doing so in last week’s career corner)! Even if they don’t respond, they may file them away for later.
  • Empathy, empathy, empathy. Name that this is a hard time for everyone, especially for those working with the most underserved population of students. Share that you understand if the hiring manager/recruiter/principal is unable to connect now, but that when things ease up, you would love to chat.
  • If you’re asking a hiring manager/recruiter to connect with you right now, make your ask very specific as opposed to “I just want to learn more about your campus.” Ask about a particular team or vacancy.

Even in the best of times, approaching networking with professionalism, a robust job-seeking toolkit, and empathy for the hiring team is always a great strategy. There is a light at the end of this tunnel, and hopefully, that will come sooner than later.

If you need support during your job search, our team can help with personalized one-on-one support.
