Gen Z and the rise of ‘conscious unbossing’

Organizations are now rethinking their org structures to attract and retain this generation.

Why we’re 'consciously unbossing' – and what that means for our careers

This article dives further into the trend of “conscious unbossing,” where over half of Gen Z workers are rejecting traditional middle-management roles in favor of individual career growth. Due to the stress and lack of rewards associated with management, Gen Z prefers autonomy and meaningful work. The author suggests that this movement, though led by younger generations, is starting to influence workers of all ages, signaling a broader workplace evolution.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Is there such a thing as asking too many questions at the end of an interview or throughout a process?

I’ve seen too many candidates fail to prepare thoughtful questions to ask after an interview. But what if they prepare too many? What’s the right balance?

Saying you have no questions at the end of an interview is a bad idea. Instead of communicating professionalism or competence, it can tell a story of disinterest and lack of substance. Preparing a few strategic questions to ask at the end of an interview is a simple way to reiterate your interest in the role and can even build a case for your candidacy. For example, I would expect a candidate applying for a leadership role to ask thoughtful questions about org-wide challenges or strategy. I would expect an early career applicant to take a special interest in the onboarding and ongoing professional development process and opportunities.

That being said, too many questions can ALSO backfire. A leadership candidate who asks non-stop questions throughout a process about logistics, the role, levels of support, etc. may give the hiring team pause about their ability to work independently or operate with flexibility. The same can be said about an early career candidate.

Before preparing questions for your interviewer or recruiter, conduct research first. You won’t impress anyone by asking questions that have already been clearly answered on the job description, recruiter emails, or website. Second, draft questions in the following categories - the role, the team, the organization, and process logistics. You don’t have to ask all the questions, especially since your questions may be addressed before you get a chance to ask, but crafting questions in advance will illustrate your approach to preparation and interest in the role. I would suggest asking no more than 2-4 questions at the end of an interview.
