As we move through Memorial Day, we are keeping the Uvalde community and all of our school and campus partners in our hearts. As a group of former teachers and campus staff ourselves, weeks like this are always incredibly difficult. Below, we’ve included resources for how to best speak with our students about this event and provide support for our community in this time of mourning and memoriam.

This report includes relevant ideas regarding the current conversation around legislation, next steps, and priorities for keeping our schools safe. We found it particularly helpful to deepen our own understanding of some of the nuances and recent trends in this conversation.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
I have gotten a ton of questions lately about whether or not jobseekers should include the green #opentowork banner on their LinkedIn profile. In the past, I recommended jobseekers primarily select the “recruiter only” feature, but now I am a proponent of including the green banner and making your job search public (especially based on feedback from many recruiters in the field). Here are the benefits of a public job search, and things to consider before including that green banner:

- There is no shame in looking for a new job! If you are, you are among millions of job seekers doing that every day.
- Recruiters want to get a strong return on their outreach to candidates, so if you meet the qualifications for their role AND it looks like you are open to a conversation, most of them are more likely to reach out to you.
- Your network is more likely to send you leads if they know you’re open to them! People don’t know you might need help in a job search unless you ask, so this is a great way for even more distant connections to think of you first when they find out about a job opening on their team or within their organization.
- Caveat: If you haven’t been open with your manager/colleagues/direct reports that you’re actively looking for a new role, consider the impact it might have for them to see your green banner. Will you face any repercussions with your manager, or will your direct reports worry about their own job security if they think their manager is leaving? Consider conversations you might need to have in advance of posting the green banner.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will improve outcomes for all public-school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems. They are looking for an expert in the legal field to be their Assistant Counsel (Attorney). The Attorney conducts cases against individuals employed in schools, certified educators and applicants for educator certification who are alleged to have abused students or minors, engaged in inappropriate relationships with students or minors, committed crimes related to the teaching profession, or violated the Educators’ Code of Ethics.
The ideal candidate has at least three (3) years of experience in the legal field with at least one (1) year in litigation, including bench trials, as a licensed attorney.

Instruction Partners is a nonprofit organization dedicated to excellent instruction for all students, with a focus on students in poverty, students with disabilities, students learning English, and students of color. They are looking for a Senior Director of Marketing and Communications who will lead the marketing team, carrying forward Instruction Partners’ marketing and communications strategy and plans while collaborating with internal teams to best support their work. This person will develop, execute, and oversee the implementation of marketing strategy, including campaigns, content marketing, success stories, events and conferences, public relations, and earned media.
The ideal candidate has 10+ years of experience working in marketing and/or communications with management experience.

Small Steps Nurturing Center provides a high-quality education, social and emotional support, a nurturing Christian environment, transportation, and nutritious meals to economically at-risk children ages two through six living in the Fifth Ward and surrounding areas of inner-city Houston, Texas. They are looking for an early childhood educational leader to be their Campus Director. This person will perform administrative duties under the general supervision of the Director of Programs; cultivate strong relationships with teachers, staff, and families; manage daily school operations in accordance with school policies; and ensure that all licensing and accreditation standards are met.
The ideal candidate has 3 plus years of administrative experience (in education setting preferred). Experience in direct supervision and working with low-income or Title 1 schools preferred.

Rocketship Public Schools believes that every student deserves the right to dream, to discover, and to develop their unique potential. They are looking for a school operations leader to be their Business Operations Manager in San Jose, CA. The Business Operations Manager (BOM) reports directly to the Principal and manages a team of hourly Operations Specialists. As the Operations leader, the BOM is responsible for all aspects of student meals, recess, arrival, dismissal, physical space, and safety at their campus. Thus, the role requires not only the ability to manage "business" topics like logistics and compliance, but also a deep understanding of behavior management, culture-setting, and behavior management coaching.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of relevant experience, with school-based experience strongly preferred. Many of Rocketship's most successful BOMs have previously been teachers and/or School Leaders in other roles.

They are looking for a Development leader to be their Development Director. The Development Director works closely with the Superintendent to meet critical timelines, data benchmarks, and development tasks related to the organization’s fundraising plan. This position will have five key areas of responsibility and focus in order to ensure the organization is meeting fundraising goals, following the organization's ten year fundraising plan, and ready for their next moves. The five focus areas include cultivation and stewardship of donors, tracking gifts and data analysis, grant writing and reporting, board engagement, and executing their comprehensive campaign.
The ideal candidate has 3+ of fundraising experience including experience leading a campaign of at least $1.5 million. Experience fundraising for K-12 is preferred but not required.
