What is Strategic Planning? 5 Steps and Processes

A strategic plan helps you define and share the direction your company will take in the next three to five years. It includes your company’s vision and mission statements, goals, and the actions you’ll take to achieve those goals. This article describes how a strategic plan compares to other project and business tools, plus four steps to create a successful

strategic plan for your company.

What You Lose with Your New Strategy

Company strategies often fail and this is frequently ascribed to unpredictable changes in the context. But most failures are the result of fairly predictable challenges, including one factor that is constantly overlooked: the role and impact of loss. What do new strategies have to do with loss and how does it affect a company?

What WorkMonger is reading right now.

Strategic Plan Step 2: Where Are We Now?

In order to plan for the future, company leaders first need to reach a common understanding of the present circumstances.  To answer this question they will need to focus discussions on two key areas: Analyzing the external and internal environment & reviewing (or developing) the vision, mission and values of the organization.

How to anticipate interview questions

Last month, I shared tips to prepare for an upcoming interview, from extensively researching the employer’s website (with a focus on their mission), studying your own resume, and reflecting on what uniquely positions you to add value in that particular role, and at that particular institution. In my work with jobseekers, I help them prepare for interviews by crafting sample interview questions for specific roles and practicing their answers. I develop sample interview questions they might encounter by studying job descriptions and anticipating the technical questions that could come up. I’d love to share my strategy for anticipating technical (i.e. job-specific) questions you might expect in an upcoming interview.

My strategy involves converting every bullet in a job description into a relevant question. For example, let’s consider a School Operations Manager. Imagine the  job description says the manager is responsible for managing the master schedule for 1,000 students. The relevant interview question might sound like this:

Our school operations manager will be responsible for working with the school leadership team and district operations team to craft a master schedule for 1,000+ students. Doing this successfully requires excellent communication skills, stakeholder management, long-term planning, and excel skills.

  • Can you provide an example of a time you had to work with various stakeholders - gathering input and relevant context - to create a complex system or project?
  • What systems did you use to keep everyone engaged, and keep the project on-track?
  • What was the end result?
  • What went well? What would you do differently if given the chance?

Utilizing this strategy to prepare for upcoming interviews will allow you to anticipate most job-specific questions and feel set-up for success every time!
