Every State's Plan to Reopen Schools in the Fall

Reopening Schools in the Context of COVID-19

As the United States considers reopening schools amid the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, policymakers and administrators need to consider how to reopen in a way that keeps students and staff safe. This brief provides insight into health and safety guidelines and social distancing strategies used in other countries that have successfully reopened their schools in the context of COVID-19. Examples are intended to support school policymakers and administrators in the United States as they plan for reopening.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Guidance for Schools

Every school is struggling with what decisions are the “right” ones to make and, in many instances, we may not know what is “right” until we have the benefit of hindsight. With that in mind, the “right” decision is one that considers public health guidance, the law, your school’s mission and culture, and your community’s safety. What is “right” for one school may not be right for another. This resource reflects current school practices and concerns gleaned from the field, along with general guidance and ideas for consideration to help educational leaders.

COVID-19 Update: State Policy Responses and Other Executive Actions to the Coronavirus in Schools

This resource, which is updated frequently, collects legislative examples, executive orders and other state actions in response to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic for schools. Resources highlight innovative state examples and responses to the challenges states and educators are currently facing and is organized by content area.

How to Reopen Schools: What Science and Other Countries Teach Us

As school districts across the United States consider whether and how to restart in-person classes, their challenge is complicated by a pair of fundamental uncertainties: No nation has tried to send children back to school with the virus raging at levels like America’s, and the scientific research about transmission in classrooms is limited. This article covers the complex calculus involved in reopening schools.

Special Report: How We Go Back to School

District and school leaders are confronting difficult, high-stakes decisions as they plan for how they will reopen schools this fall as the global pandemic rages on. Safety for students and staff members is the chief priority. But with no vaccine or effective treatment yet against COVID-19, no one can be fully shielded from the risk. That leaves K-12 leaders to balance three critical—often competing—responsibilities: the health and safety of their people, the role their schools play in the larger community, and the effective teaching of their students. To help education leaders navigate these monumental decisions, Education Week lays out the big challenges ahead and some solutions in an eight-part series of reported stories, diagrams, and data visualizations.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

I’ve heard from a few readers who are curious about how to reach out to a recruiter or hiring manager and ask for insights into openings. Here are my pro-tips:

  • Share your job function (perhaps your current role or most recent role), list your current/most recent employers, and the roles you’re currently exploring. Show that you have a clear vision of your areas of expertise and the types of roles/functions you’re pursuing (your Professional Value Proposition, which I write about often in these weekly Career Corners).

  • Keep your email short and professional—there’s no need to share you personal history or entire life story. I have several clients who try to anticipate EVERY question a reader might ask, and end up writing a novel. In an email, less is more.

  • End with an easy question/request  (some examples below):

    • Are you currently hiring for roles that might be a good match for my skills, or do you have a timeline for opening up such roles in the near future?

    • Are you open to a quick informational call to help me learn more about the work you do at your organization?

    • If you’re not hiring at this time, are you aware of other organizations that may be looking for someone with my particular skill-set?

Avoid asking the recruiter or hiring manager to do all the mental work of reviewing your resume and deciding the kind of roles which you qualify for (as there may be many). Simply tell us what you’re looking for and provide an easy way we can assist you!
