Watch For These 4 ‘Red Flags’ During The Job Interview, Warns Harvard Business Expert

We spend an enormous amount of our lives working and we certainly want to make sure our workplace is a good fit for us. Here are some red flags to identify early on in the process so you can assess whether or not you want to work there.

Ask HR: How Can Applicants Know If They Fit a Company’s Culture?

The job market has changed drastically in recent years where job seekers now are a lot more empowered to choose where they want to work. HRM President and Chief Executive Officer, Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., provides a good way for applicants to evaluate the cultural fit of a prospective employer.

What WorkMonger is reading right now.

Why Employers Need To Look Beyond Skills To Land The Perfect Employee

A recent study conducted by the MIT Sloan School of Business found that the primary reason people are leaving is because of what they perceive as a toxic work culture. But that dynamic has also created significant challenges for HR professionals and recruiters in backfilling their open positions. Even if they can find qualified candidates to interview, what should they prioritize and why? How can you determine whether someone will be a cultural fit within the organization or not?

Multiple Promotions Within One Organization - How Do You Ensure It Doesn’t Appear That You’re “Job Hopping” on Your Resume

I work with so many talented professionals who take on new responsibilities and job titles within the same organization over a short amount of time. Often, they worry that even when they’re in the same organization, the frequent moves within a short window might give hiring managers pause (especially if it’s not clear that it’s the same employer or that the new roles are increasingly more senior). Instead of listing out your roles like this on your resume with Job Title, Employer, and Dates, try this:

Employer, City, ST……..Year – Year (for the entirety of your employment, including all roles)

Most Recent Job Title (year - year)

    • Achievement 1
    • Achievement 2
    • Achievement 3

Previous Job Title (year – year)

    • Achievement 1
    • Achievement 2
    • Achievement 3

You can start your first bullet off for each role to indicate the promotion (i.e. “promoted within 6 months to lead instruction for all middle school campuses within the school district following exceptional performance in previous role). Make sure to also indicate the scope of each role to demonstrate an increase in responsibilities (the size of the team, the number of teams/schools/individuals your work supports, the size of the budget you manage, the different projects you work on or lead, etc.).

Sometimes, your frequent moves aren’t a result of promotions, but they might be other factors (like you decided to move from fundraising to operations within the same organization, or perhaps there was a reduction in force on a particular team). If you find that employers frequently bring up questions regarding your rationale for such moves, consider explaining on your resume (i.e. [transitioned to the Operations team to manage all facilities and nutrition workstreams for the [insert name of organization”].
