How can I update my government resume to apply for roles in the private sector?
|
|
|
In recent weeks, I’ve been hearing from job seekers who’ve been impacted by the federal government layoffs. Some of these job seekers have been working for the government for years, and aren’t clear on the changes they need to make on their resume as they apply for new roles.
Here are some of the major things to update, along with considerations for creating a compelling resume for roles in the social impact sector:
• Remove your citizenship status.
• Remove your full home address, but including city and state is fine.
• Remove the month and day of employment, and just include years.
• Remove the amount of hours worked, your job title, employer, and years worked are all you need.
• Remove the job grade. If your job title doesn’t clearly convey your level of seniority to an external audience, write a short description of your role under the job title which includes the scope of you work such as size of team you led, budget you managed, who you reported to, etc.).
• Remove the entire job description, and instead include bullets which focus on results achieved within your job. Each bullet should include a metric, or qualitative data that shares context about your work.
• Audit the length of your resume. A resume used for applying to roles within the federal government is likely several pages long. A resume used in the private sector will be 1-2 pages long. You can shorten the length of your resume by removing the job description for each role (see bullet above), only including bullets which share a relevant accomplishment, and condensing older roles into simply sharing the job title, employer, and years worked without bullets (this is especially strategic for roles more than 15 years ago, or in non-relevant job functions).
If you are navigating a sudden layoff, whether from the federal government or in another industry, my heart goes out to you.
