What do the terms and phrases “attention to detail,” “relationship-builder,” and “team player” have in common? You shouldn’t explicitly mention them on any of your job-seeking materials!
Instead of listing “attention to detail” as a skill on your resume, LinkedIn profile, cover letter, or interview answers, describe and provide examples of your attention to detail! Show me carefully formatted documents and written materials that show evidence of copy editing. Complete all aspects of an application, reviewing instructions multiple times to ensure no task is missed. I’ve recently seen a trend in job postings which ask candidates to include a random word like “pineapple” on their resume or cover letter to demonstrate they read all the way through (I’m not placing any judgment on this trend, just sharing it so you can be on the lookout for instructions that seem buried in the fine print when you’re applying to roles).
Instead of listing “relationship-builder” as a skill on your resume, LinkedIn profile, cover letter, or interview answers, describe and provide examples of partnerships you’ve built, relationships you’ve cultivated, and instances when you worked across lines of difference. The more examples you provide, the better case you’re making for your strengths in relationship building!
Instead of listing “team player” as a skill on your resume, LinkedIn profile, cover letter, or interview answers, describe and provide examples of times you took on work beyond the scope of your role, stepped up to support a teammate, or served as the Swiss army knife of your organization (fixing problems across a variety of contexts).
Every day, I read resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles where these terms are listed with limited evidence to actually demonstrate capacity with any of these skills. This is a wasted opportunity! Get specific and allow the reader to actually envision your skills in these areas versus asking them to just take your word for it.
