Optimizing your resume

When I connect with new clients, the first thing I ask them to send me is their current resume. I find that most job-seekers are underselling themselves - their impact, their qualifications, and their unique value proposition. If I - someone who is well-versed in education/social impact organizations and job functions  - has to google your previous organization (because you didn’t provide a high-level overview of the mission/core business) or wonder what you actually did in your past job, you probably have clear ways to optimize your resume!

In a job search, you are the product and a resume is your marketing document. Just like no marketing campaign is the same, there’s no singular one-size-fits-all template for a resume. However, like with any campaign, there are best practices to consider employing.

A strong resume tells a story of results vs responsibilities. It also clearly expands on the scope of your work. Review your resume: does it clearly tell the reader what you accomplished (goals achieved and value added), with plenty of numbers, or does it list your job functions?

  • Replace phrases like “responsible for” or “tasked with,”  to action verbs such as  “initiated,” ”developed,” or “overhauled.”
  • Not sure what kind of results to include on your resume? Review target job descriptions and the required experience and role overview - identify proof points of you doing that kind of work in past jobs (i.e. a college counselor would include data about the college-going and -graduating rates of their students, amount of money secured in scholarships, partnerships formed with nonprofits and universities, etc.).
  • Here’s an example of a result vs a responsibility: “raised $50,000 by writing 3 grants in 2 months to support the launch of an innovative community garden” vs “researched and wrote grant proposals to local and national foundations.”

Yes, the way you deliver the story of your impact is useful, AND the story itself is what matters most. Don’t lose sleep over formats and templates - what you find on the free templates section or Microsoft Office and Canva is fine. Instead, ask yourself - have I provided ample proof points of my capacity to step into this target job tomorrow and deliver? If not, identify new content you can add to better illustrate your qualifications for target roles.
