End-of-year stress can be transformed into an opportunity for productivity and growth with the right approach. By setting realistic expectations, leaders can focus on high-impact tasks and align workloads with team bandwidth to avoid burnout. Open communication is critical—checking in with employees, sharing mental health resources, and being readily available helps maintain morale during the busy fourth quarter. Strategic planning, both for Q4 and the upcoming Q1, ensures a balanced workload while allowing teams to fully recharge. With achievable goals and thoughtful preparation, leaders can turn year-end pressures into a solid springboard for success in the new year.

This article explores strategies to prevent end-of-year burnout, a state of mental and physical exhaustion often caused by heightened work pressures and holiday demands. Unlike temporary tiredness, burnout can severely impact health, productivity, and overall well-being. To manage this, individuals are encouraged to prioritize self-care, set boundaries, and take time to pause and reassess their needs. Employers also have a role to play by fostering open communication, acknowledging burnout as a real issue, and supporting employees through well-being initiatives. By addressing these challenges, both individuals and organizations can ensure a healthier, more productive start to the new year.

This piece explores how employers can maintain team motivation and productivity during the winter months, when energy and focus often decline. Strategies such as flexible work schedules and personalized goals empower employees to stay engaged while managing their workload effectively. Recognizing achievements, offering professional development opportunities, and encouraging focused work blocks, like the Pomodoro Method, can help sustain morale. Festive incentives, shorter meetings, and breaking tasks into manageable goals reduce stress and keep teams on track. By fostering a supportive and flexible environment, organizations can boost motivation and set the stage for a productive start to the new year.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

How to leverage a new resume
|
|
|
Some clients come to me at the beginning of their job search. Many reach out after they’ve struck out on their own. If they’re getting rejected at the application stage, we typically identify that their resume is holding them back, or the roles they’re targeting are misaligned given their professional background and goals.
At times, our resume overhaul is quite dramatic. These clients lament submitting their older documents for dream roles months before, and wonder if they’ll ever get a re-do. Hiring is dynamic, so the answer is likely yes!
Here are strategies for utilizing your new resume with previous employers or recruiters you’ve applied to throughout your job search:
1. Recruiters: If you previously connected with recruiters at search firms (like my colleagues here at WorkTogether Talent Consulting), you can reach out to reconnect and share your new resume. Here is some sample language:
“Hello! We had a chance to connect in [insert month] regarding the [insert role name] opportunity. Since we last spoke, I’ve updated some of my job-searching materials and would love to re-share them with you for your own records. I’m also curious, are you currently working on roles related to [insert your job function]? If so, I’d be interested in learning more about them.”
2. Employers: If you previously applied to a role that is STILL posted (and you were rejected at the application stage), you could consider following up. Identify the recruiter or hiring manager via the employer’s website (or LinkedIn, if the website is not helpful). You can send a variation of the message below:
“Hello! I recently applied to [insert job title]. I was not invited to move forward in the process, but remain very excited about your organization. Candidly, I reviewed my resume after the application rejection and took the opportunity to update the document to better convey my experience and impact. Given that the role is still posted, may I re-share my resume for your consideration? Or, if there are different open roles you’d recommend I target instead, I’d appreciate your insight.
3. Employers: If you previously applied to a role that is no longer posted, but new roles are now posted that speak to your professional interests and qualifications. Simply re-apply with the new document! You may have an existing account on file in their application portal - make sure to audit all the saved information and update appropriately.
Following up with a recruiter or employer with an updated resume is not a guarantee to immediately landing a job. That said, it can be one part of your job-search strategy.
