Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

When you do TOO much

I met with a client recently who I’m sure never sleeps. In addition to serving as a member of a school district’s C-suite, this client consults on a variety of initiatives across multiple sectors (I mean MULTIPLE, including retail and legal, so not limited to education and nonprofits). This person holds both a traditional leadership role while running a vibrant consulting business. And their resume tries to be everything to everyone all at once.
I support many entrepreneurial clients who are constantly working on a diversity of projects, whether they’re earning extra income and/or simply enjoy staying busy and agile. The problem comes when clients like these want to translate their extensive experience to an external audience, especially an audience that only understands linear and traditional career experience (i.e. one role at a time, obtained after taking on increasing levels of leadership in the same industry).

In reviewing the resumes of my more entrepreneurial clients, I’m initially confused rather than impressed. These resumes tend to lack editing or framing, sharing all work in chronological order (which might show several current roles), and leave it up to the reader to make sense of all the content. The typical resume reader, whether a recruiter or hiring manager, is likely more used to reviewing linear/traditional job experiences in a resume document, and may miss the main message the job-seeker is trying to convey. In fact, sharing too much experience on a resume can delegitimize relevant leadership work for the casual reviewer - I mean, the average person can’t possibly manage this much work at a high level, right?

Instead of asking someone reading your resume or LinkedIn profile to believe you can operate at such a high level on such a variety of high-level projects, tell your story in a more targeted and strategic way. Consider a section on your resume for your main leadership roles which are aligned to target roles/industry, and a different section for consulting. Also orient the reader by writing an executive summary, highlighting consulting/part-time work in thoughtful ways (i.e. “in addition to serving as a cabinet-level leader of school systems, I regularly consult with business owners in the areas of strategy, talent, and operations”). You can also create a separate document highlighting your various consulting projects, and hyperlink it within the resume, or share it as needed with hiring managers.
