Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

How to Reach Out to a Recruiter on LinkedIn
|
In today’s job market, you’ve probably heard that it’s helpful to connect with recruiters. I asked my colleagues what advice or tips they have for job seekers who are thinking about reaching out to recruiters via LinkedIn or email. Here are some pointers shared by my colleagues Taylor Gonzalez, WorkMonger’s Director of Partnerships, and Alina Mitchell, Senior Manager of Talent Services:
|
. Learn more about how recruiters in the Education sector operate. The majority of recruiters working in the Education industry, whether employed full-time within organizations or as part of talent search firms (like WorkMonger), are working to support specific employers (versus representing job seekers). They also work on just a handful of roles at a time. That means that a recruiter isn’t able to hold your hand and submit your application to different roles. Instead, they are likely posting jobs, reviewing applications, headhunting talent, and conducting interviews. They are also the liaison between a candidate and a hiring manager. It’s important to have this context before you reach out to recruiters and make a specific ask.
. Do your research! Don’t just blindly contact anyone with the job title of “Recruiter” on LinkedIn. Read someone’s LinkedIn profile and/or visit their website to get a better sense of the industry they support and the kind of roles they work on. Many recruiters, myself included, get messages from candidates all the time that aren’t industry specific (i.e. someone reaches out asking to help them get a job in corporate IT, but I work in Education). Then, write them a message specifically naming that you understand they recruit within the Education sector and you’re excited to join their professional network.
. Be thoughtful with your ask. Instead of asking that they send you a list of jobs (which you can find on a job board or visiting their company page) or grant you an interview, reach out instead to let them know you’ve already applied for a particular role at their organization (or an organization they’re recruiting for) and are putting a face behind an application. You can also ask a couple targeted questions that you couldn’t find after researching on your own. Prior to reaching out with any questions, you should already have a vision of the role you want, including pay, location, timeline, and team size. It is not a recruiter’s job to identify your goals for you (but a career coach can support you with that!).
. Bonus Tip: Email > LinkedIn messaging. Most recruiters will have their email addresses in their LinkedIn profiles or on their company website. LinkedIn inboxes are hard to manage and are a mix of personal and professional. If you can, always email them directly at their work address.
Recruiters are working overtime these days filling jobs in the wake of the Great Resignation, and they may not have a lot of time to respond to LinkedIn messages or hop on the phone for an informational call. If you don’t get a response, it’s not personal. Just consider reaching out to a recruiter as one tool in your job seeking toolkit, along with writing a tailored resume and cover letter, elevating your LinkedIn profile, and building connections in your desired industry.
