How to Figure Out If Your Performance Programs Are Working for You

Conducting performance reviews remotely may be just the start you need to reevaluate your performance management program. You likely need to make some updates not just to accommodate being remote, but also to adapt to likely organization goal changes after the events of this year. Here’s how to see if your performance management system is right for your team.

2020 in Review: Handling Annual Conversations with Employees

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Most hiring managers will ask you for a list of your professional references at some point in your interview process. Here are things to be mindful of when providing references:

  • Unless specified by the hiring manager, assume they want to speak to your current or previous supervisors. Failure to list managers will give future employers pause, leading them to create their own narrative about why you chose to not include supervisors.

  • If you haven’t shared with your current supervisor that you’re interviewing for roles, don’t fret. Simply provide contact information for past managers. If a hiring manager specifically asks for the contact information of a current manager, let them know you’re not yet comfortable letting your current manager know about your job search. In their place, offer as references current colleagues who can speak to the nature of your work. Most hiring managers will understand.

  • You will set yourself and your references up for the most success if you keep them informed about your interviewing progress. Let them know you’ve shared their contact information with a hiring manager, the specific roles or organizations you’re targeting, and prep them with a list of skills, strengths, etc. that you’d like them to highlight. A prepared reference list reflects well on you as a candidate - it shows you’re truly invested in the role and process.
