Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
Leveraging AI for some honest job-searching feedback
I work with brilliant clients. Talented professionals who look at a job description, and know with confidence that even though they may lack some of the requisite experiences and skills, they can upskill quickly and make good use of their many transferable strengths. They sometimes bring me target job descriptions for roles that are a bit of a pivot or promotion, and ask me for my honest reaction on whether or not it’s sensible to invest time in applying. We analyze the job descriptions line-by-line, and discuss how their experience might be viewed by a discerning recruiter or hiring manager.
But what happens if you don’t have immediate access to a seasoned career coach or recruiter to guide you? Enter AI.
I wrote a prompt for AI that you can use at home:
“Here is the job description for [role]: [enter the url for the job description]. Here is my current resume [copy and paste it here, or include the url for a google doc version]. Act as a highly selective recruiter or hiring manager. How qualified and competitive do I appear based on the job description? Do not count my transferable experience.”
Follow-up: “What kind of experience/qualifications would I need to include to be more competitive?”
When I hear that candidates are applying to hundreds of roles and not receiving interviews, my gut tells me they are a.) submitting weak materials (i.e. resumes without any impact metrics, cover letters that aren’t personalized, etc), or the more likely scenario, b.) they are applying for roles for which they are currently not qualified or less experienced than other applicants. Using the prompt above can help you use your time wisely, investing your energy into applying for roles for which you are extremely competitive.
