Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
Providing evidence of your strengths leading teams.

I recently coached a client who is interviewing for an executive position within a large nonprofit organization. Beyond demonstrating technical expertise in their functional area, this individual needs to clearly convey their strengths leading multi-layered, diverse, and geographically dispersed teams.
As someone who has interviewed and coached many senior leaders, I find that most managers struggle to provide specifics related to their strengths leading and developing teams. Anyone can argue that they’re a great manager, but a strong candidate will go beyond sharing that they love to mentor others, how much their teams love them, and citing many direct reports they supervise. Whether you’re updating your resume or prepping interview answers, share stats and evidence related to the following instead:
- Retention Data: A strong manager likely has strong retention data. What percentage of your team have you retained over the years? How does it compare to your peer managers and their retention data? Are you retaining everyone at similar rates or do you struggle to retain different groups of employees (for example by region, race, gender, religion, years of experience, etc.)?
- Promotion Data: A strong manager is one who cultivates and develops the talent of those on your team. Can you share data related to the number of direct reports who have received promotions (whether in your organization or externally) following their time serving on your team?
- Recruitment/Hiring Data: Have you improved recruiting or hiring processes which created a strong candidate experience and increased the % of candidates accepting job offers to join your team? Have you built in strategies to diversify your team?
- Feedback Survey Data: Do you regularly survey your team to understand strengths and opportunities in your management style? Does your organization survey the entire organization and ask individuals to provide feedback on the effectiveness of other teams?
- Awards: Have you been recognized for strong leadership? Some employers provide annual awards, or create selective leadership programs for promising managers.
- References/Recommendations: In addition to building a list of current and former managers for professional references, identify current or former direct reports who can speak to their experiences working on your team. Make sure to prep anyone you list as a reference - manager or direct report - to accurately highlight your management and coaching skills when they speak to your future employers.
