Efforts to Retain Diverse Talent Should Permeate a Company

The recruitment, retention, and advancement of diverse talent is a strategic imperative in corporate America—more so today than ever before. Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

A client reached out to me with this question that I imagine may be on other people’s minds: “how do I discuss losing my job in 2020 during my job search?”

So many people have this concern during this year of record unemployment. Perhaps you’d already been looking for a while, or you had to take time off to care for others throughout 2020. Maybe your employer went through a reorganization.

It is both my belief and experience that most hiring managers and recruiters understand these are unprecedented times and aren’t going to focus on the reasons for your unemployment. They are most interested in why you’re interested in working at their organization and determining if you’re the right fit for their open roles. Here’s how you can do that:

  • Be strategic in your job search. Do your research on an organization’s mission and vision, and really analyze the job descriptions you’re applying to.
  • In both your cover letters and initial conversations with a hiring manager/recruiter, draw explicit connections between your skillset/professional interests/values and the mission of the organization/specifics of the open role.
  • You don’t have to share specific personal history but can allude more generally to your reason for seeking new employment if you’re asked directly about your reasons for leaving your last position. You can reference that your organization went through a reorganization, that you took time off in response to the global pandemic, or just share that you’ve been seeking a role that could be a really great fit for you given your skills and interests.
