Job-searching with a less-than-optimal current job title
|
|
|
Clients and readers send me their job-search questions each week. Here’s a recent one (that I hear often):
“I am a senior leader within my organization, but my job title doesn’t translate that way externally. How do I position myself for senior roles when my current job title isn’t reflective of my actual level of seniority???”
I discuss job titles A LOT with my clients, especially when it comes to signifiers of seniority (i.e. associate, coordinator, manager, director, managing director, VP, etc.). The reality is that your job title at one organization may not translate well to an external audience, and that can be an issue when conducting a job search. For example, I had a client who oversaw all new teacher preparation for a large public school district, and their job title was “coordinator.” I’ve had clients with the job title “Chief of Staff” who mostly provide administrative support to a leadership team, and others who are the number two within large organizations.
Let’s say you’re currently the “Associate, Strategic Initiatives” within one organization, and now plan on applying to the role of “Managing Director of Special Projects” at another organization. Based on the job description, you meet all qualifications and it’s mostly a lateral move. Your current job title suggests otherwise. Here are some tips to navigate:
- On your resume, put a different job title in parentheses next to your current job title. For example: Associate, Strategic Initiatives (Senior Lead of Org-Wide Strategy and Operations).
- Create a headline under your name in your resume, and align it with your target roles (i.e. Strategy and Operations Leader).
- In your resume bullets, clarify the reporting structure for your current position. For example, “Report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and lead a 4-person team.”
- Also on your resume, quantify and qualify the scope of your experience and impact - size of the projects you lead, numbers of people your work serves, size of the budget you oversee or work with, and progress towards goals.
- If asked about the scope of your role in an interview, answer directly: “I’ve noticed that the job titles at my current organization don’t always align with those of other employers. For example, Associates at [insert current company] are akin to managing directors elsewhere. I see this role at your organization as an aligned and exciting opportunity, where I can apply my background in [insert background] to accelerate [insert target company name]’s impact.”

Meeting Street Schools (MSS), a unique network of five schools across South Carolina, was founded on the belief that all students can learn and deserve the opportunity to receive a high-quality education, regardless of their socio-economic background. It is the network's belief that a student’s zip code should not determine a student’s access to quality education. MSS is looking for an Operations expert to be their new Director of Operations. The Director of Operations will be responsible for overseeing all school-level operations, and directly managing a small team of school-based staff.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of work experience including supervisory and management experience. Prior experience working in a school or school system, knowledge of school data and operations systems, and/or South Carolina state law and compliance is strongly preferred.
