Companies Are Being Forced to Reveal What A Job Pays. It’s A Start.

Salary Ranges Should Be Listed On Job Descriptions, And Worker Compensation Should Be Disclosed For All To See

When you’re searching for a new job, one of the most important things you want to know is compensation. Of course, there is the organizational culture, responsibilities, and growth potential, but if we’re honest, money talks. You’ve probably noticed that nearly all of the job descriptions lack basic salary information. Why is this the case, and what are some potential consequences a lack of salary transparency can cause?

What WorkMonger is reading right now.

How The Pay Transparency Movement’s Success Will Change The Way Jobs Are Listed

A growing number of states and municipalities are enacting salary transparency laws, a stepping stone toward eliminating wage discrepancies based on gender, race, and other unfair practices. The momentum could lead to even higher pay at a time of record wage increases and force employers to make significant changes to job listings.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Research an organization before your upcoming interview

Beyond evaluating your technical skills and qualifications for a role, hiring managers and recruiters will also assess your understanding of their organization and alignment with the mission. This is especially true in school districts, nonprofits, and other social impact organizations - it’s often not the size of the paycheck that drives employee’s commitment to the work (this mindset is changing - you should never have to choose between the mission and paying your bills, but that’s another conversation for another day!).

Here are my pro tips for learning about an organization prior to your interview:

- Review the “About Us” page on their website. Find their mission, vision, and history. If there’s a publicly available strategic plan, read it too!

- Search for the “Latest News” section of their website (if available). There, you will likely find press releases, news articles, blogs, and publications. You don’t have to read everything but focus on recent articles to get a sense of how the organization is prioritizing its time and the story they’re trying to tell.

- Follow the organization on social media - Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, Tik Tok, etc. You’ll find that each channel likely has a different voice targeting a different audience (i.e., future donors, future staff, current stakeholders like students/families, etc.). Reviewing as many channels as possible will give you a strong understanding of an organization’s brand and its priorities at this time.

- Review the hiring team’s LinkedIn profiles and/or bios on the employer’s website. This will help you get a sense of their own story and find points of connection. Perhaps the person who is interviewing you is very new to the organization - you can ask them what their own transition has been like and what has surprised them since joining the organization. Or if someone has been there for years, you can ask them what org-wide changes have energized them the most given their tenure at the organization and their context about what has worked/not worked in the past.

- Do you know anyone who works at this organization or has worked there in the past? Consider reaching out and asking if they’d be open to a quick chat to tell you more about their own experience and share insights about what might come up in an interview.

The more research you conduct, the easier it will be to tailor your interview answers to the needs of the role and organization. You might look at this list and think, “I have to do ALL that?” No, you don’t, especially if you’re applying for a less senior position. If you were to pick ONE thing, focus on the “About Us” page on the website. That being said, I would expect anyone applying for an externally facing and/or executive-level position to be well-versed in the organization’s mission and have extensive context about the work, the organization’s big wins, and current challenges.

Lastly - in conversations with my colleagues, we’ve also noticed a rising trend of candidates casting a very wide net in their job search, applying to tens of jobs at once, and not remembering who they are interviewing with on which day. If that sounds like your own job search experience, I recommend maintaining a spreadsheet with all the roles you’ve applied to and upcoming interviews so you can quickly reference the employer, role, and job description prior to a conversation with a recruiter.
