Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Should I make up scenarios for interview answers if I don’t think my actual experience is compelling?

A client of mine is interviewing for roles after a 5-year hiatus from working in aligned positions. Beyond taking a few years off post a pandemic-related role termination, and then serving as primary care-giver in their home, they had a short contract position performing less relevant work with few tangible outcomes. They wonder if it’s ok to provide 5+ years-old examples in an interview, or if it’s better to take some liberties with their recent contract role (for example, share strategies they would have used or outcomes they could have achieved had there been more time in the role)?

I’m not an ethicist or the final word on this topic, but when in doubt, tell the truth! The point of an interview is to determine someone's capacity to perform a particular job. Interviewers do this by asking questions which glean how a candidate has performed similar roles in the past, with specific scenarios and verifiable outcomes. Not to mention, a hiring manager might conduct a reference check with your former contract employer and discover some of your examples are embellished or fabricated. If your aligned experience is multiple years old, strategic framing is key.

In the case of my client, I recommended the following:

First, share context about their most recent contract position and why they plan on sharing older but more relevant examples: "in my contract role, X and Y were my primary responsibilities so I didn’t have a chance to...The example I am sharing instead is from my last full time role, so a bit of time ago, but I think it's most directly related to your question..."

They could also frame their answer this way instead: "given where the org was at the time, we just weren't in a place to implement a solution like that. If hired for this role with your organization, I'd want ___ and ___ to be true because that's what I value as a leader"

There may be many reasons why a job-seeker’s interview answers need to be older, whether they took time off of paid work or not! I will always recommend providing specific, relevant, and authentic answers when job-searching, but take time to plan strategic framing beforehand.
