Thoughts on Leader Self-Development: Do Better

Self-Development is a life-long pursuit. Leaders cannot live and lead with regret, thinking they failed to learn a new idea “too late” in their career. The author of this article offers a few mental shifts to support leaders in their self-development journey in order to better themselves and those around them.

The Self-Management Revolution Is Here: How To Embrace It

Tips for limiting age discrimination on your resume?

Choosing not to hire someone because of their age is illegal in the United States (specifically 40 or older), but age discrimination is a reality none-the-less. Some hiring managers might assume a more experienced applicant won’t enjoy the role or is over-qualified, or that a younger applicant won’t be able to build influence with their older peers/relevant stakeholders. Here are strategies you can employ, whether you might be perceived as much younger (even when you’re qualified) or older than your fellow applicants, on a resume:

  1. Remove your graduation years - you don’t need them!
  2. Audit your formatting
    1. Font (avoid times new roman and stick with a san serif font instead.
    2. Remove your home address - only include the city and state.
    3. Make sure you only include relevant sections. Omit objective statements and interest sections - these add no value and can actually bias the reader against you.
    4. Avoid a super modern template with a ton of color or graphics - though this can seem polished and catch your attention, I assure you that most recruiters and hiring managers prefer standard formatting that is easy to read.
    5. When applying for jobs in the USA, do not include your picture. I repeat, do not include your picture.
    6. Education should be included at the bottom of your resume as opposed to the top, unless you know recruiters for this type of role prefer it this way (i.e. a teaching applicant might want to include their certifications at the top of your resume, or a school superintendent would want to include their relevant degrees, licensure or training there).
  3. Remove or minimize less relevant, older work experience (i.e. more than 15 to 20 years ago). My favorite way to do this is by creating an “Additional Experience” section and simply including the job title, employer, and dates of employment (though you can opt not to include these). This allows you to still include your entire work history, especially when it tells a powerful story about your career trajectory, without making the number of jobs stand out.
  4. If you have less professional experience than others applying to the same roles, make sure the content of your resume demonstrates a clear track record of success in aligned roles (this is important no matter your age!). Make sure to also include volunteer leadership roles that can show more of the breadth of your experience.
