Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

How to reflect family/caregiving on your resume (if you took a break from the workforce)?

I sometimes work with clients who are re-entering the paid workforce after taking many years off to raise children or care for sick partners or aging relatives. I even had a client who took time off work to care for a best friend. Caregiving is critical work in our society, but it’s not always clear how to reflect that work on a resume or LinkedIn. Here are some ideas:
On your resume, name that you were caregiving in simple and clear terms. Avoid language like “Chief Operating Officer of the Wolfowicz Household” or “Private Chef and Operations Manager of the Wolfowicz Family” and instead write “Stay-at-Home Parent” or “Family Caregiving Career Pause”. Include the years, and feel free to include a few bullets for how you spent that time if they are relevant.

Here is a very specific example: I once had a client who cared for a loved one with significant medical needs, and they were applying for roles in HR and operations (roles which require strong foundation in compliance, benefits, project management, communication, and organization). This client included bullets under their caregiving pause section to write about the scope of their experience navigating health insurance claims, patient advocacy, managing a complex schedule of medications and doctor’s visits, etc. In no way were they taking liberties with describing their experience  - managing their loved one’s healthcare and ongoing needs was full-time work, and they reflected that accurately on their resume and in interview answers.

If you have volunteered or engaged in continuing education during your caregiving pause, definitely include that experience too! I recently worked with a client who stepped out of the paid workforce more than a decade ago to stay at home with their children. At first, they worried about not having experience to showcase on their resume. Once we had a chance to meet and discuss the relevance of volunteer experience, their resume was full of the many ways this person supported their local school district and community organizations. While not every person who takes a caregiving pause has the capacity or interest to volunteer outside of the home, taking on some volunteer work or gaining experience with new technology (through online courses, for example) before pursuing full-time work again can strengthen job applications.
