Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Recently, a client of mine reached out to me to discuss salary negotiation. This person is in the process of making a career pivot (similar job function, but changing industries), and an employer has asked them to provide their salary requirements. My client wanted support with their approach to responding. Here’s the context and guidance I provided:

Typically, big employers have a dedicated Human Resources team with compensation analysts and partners on the finance team who set the salary range for each role. Ranges exist to ensure compensation reflects a candidate’s years of experience, credentials, and unique skills. When an employer asks a candidate for their salary requirements, it can feel like a gotcha moment. Will they pay you less than their budgeted range if they think you’ll accept a lower salary? Of course, that’s a possibility, but in my experience, employers simply ask this question to ensure your requirements fit into their budgeted range and will accept their offer once they make it.

Though many employers are transitioning to salary transparency in the recruiting and hiring process, you won’t always have access to salary ranges, especially if you’re pivoting to a new industry. Here are some options for responding to the question: “what are your salary requirements?”:

Option 1: Flip the question. "Can you please share the budgeted salary range for this role? I didn't see it listed on the job description. From there, I'd be happy to share my salary requirements and ensure alignment.

Option 2: Conduct some research on Glassdoor (or similar websites). Know that these salaries are self-reported, but you can get a sense of what folks with your desired job title are earning within different companies. You can say, "from my research, I understand that [insert job title]s within [name of company or name of the industry] typically earn between $X - $Y. Is that aligned with the budgeted range for this role?"

Option 3: Provide your range (and conduct some research first!): "In learning more about the scope of this role, I was expecting something within the range of $X - $Y. Is that aligned with what you’ve budgeted?"
