Setting up your future job-seeking self for success on your resume

I work with many clients who enlist my services after a few years in the same role. They may not have updated their resume since they landed their role, as they prepare to job search again they’re struggling to find the language to describe their high-impact responsibilities and achievements over time. Here’s how you can avoid this scenario every time you start a new role:

  1. Create a google or word document and copy and paste the language from the job description for the role you’ve just accepted. You’ll want to save this to have on-file for the future.
  2. Use your AI assistant of choice, and customize the following prompt: “Convert this job description into 6-8 corresponding resume bullets for the [job title at employer name]. Also write a 1-2 sentence high-level overview of the role to include on my resume. Here's the job description: [copy and paste the language from the job description].
  3. Open up your existing resume and copy and paste the bullets created by the AI assistant into your resume document. Note that the AI can create a good starting point, but it will fail to do the most important part: including actual data about the scope of your role and what you achieved. Once you’re in the role, make time to include data and add/delete bullets to reflect the actual work.
  4. Refer back to the google or word document where you saved the job description. Consider keeping a running, less formal list of accomplishments in that same document, which you can add to your resume as needed. Consider doing this data dump quarterly - not only will it support your future resume-writing efforts, you’ll feel well-prepared to engage in performance reviews and internal interviews.

Taking a few minutes at the beginning of a new role, and investing time for data collection a few times a year, will save you a lot of time in the future!
