Acts of allyship are generally appreciated. With that in mind, organizations can help potential allies by educating them on how their efforts are received and by creating a culture where open communication and support are encouraged.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Applying to roles for which you are “overqualified”
|
|
|
“Is it strategic to apply for roles for which you are overqualified?” This is a question I sometimes receive from clients. There may be many reasons why you choose to apply for a less senior position. Maybe it’s a competitive market and you’re not getting bites for your target roles. Maybe you’re tired of managing a large team or program, and want to be more focused. Maybe you’re pivoting industries or moving from a large organization to a start-up and you’re looking for an “in.” Maybe you’re tired and want a job you can do in your sleep. No matter your rationale, you can absolutely apply for less senior roles!
When applying for less senior positions after being in a senior-level role, consider naming the elephant in the room. This can be as simple as explicitly calling it out in a cover letter, or in a conversation with a recruiter. Here’s some sample language:
“You may be curious as to why I’m targeting this position following years as an [insert more senior title]. Having worn many hats in my previous roles, I’ve found that where I get the most energy is when I’m [insert the job functions of this particular position you’re applying to]. In my next role, I’m looking to spend the majority of my time in this way. As a big fan of [insert this organization’s name], I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to explore this job opportunity with you after reviewing the job description and connecting with members of your team.”
Even if you choose not to call out that you’re “overqualified,” share the aspects of the role and organization that speak to you, and how your experience uniquely positions you to add value.

Meeting Street Schools (MSS), a unique network of five schools across South Carolina, was founded on the belief that all students can learn and deserve the opportunity to receive a high-quality education, regardless of their socio-economic background. It is the network's belief that a student’s zip code should not determine a student’s access to quality education. MSS is looking for an Operations expert to be their new Director of Operations. The Director of Operations will be responsible for overseeing all school-level operations, and directly managing a small team of school-based staff.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of work experience including supervisory and management experience. Prior experience working in a school or school system, knowledge of school data and operations systems, and/or South Carolina state law and compliance is strongly preferred.
