The “audacity” of applying for an internal promotion

Applying for any role is a high-stakes endeavor. Applying for an internal role can be even more charged and anxiety-inducing. Depending on the role and process, your candidacy may be very visible to your colleagues. They may be part of the hiring committee, your fellow applicant, or simply just hear about your candidacy through the grape vine. Here are some of the fears my clients (I’ll refer to them as “the applicant”) have shared with me about internal processes:

  1. What if colleagues judge or laugh at the applicant's ambition?
  2. What if colleagues disagree with how the applicant has presented their experience?
  3. What if colleagues don’t vouch for this applicant to leadership/the hiring committee because they prefer a different internal candidate receive the promotion instead?
  4. What if the applicant has to compete for the role with peers, their managers or mentors, or friends?
  5. What is the applicant doesn’t receive the job, but everyone knows they applied. How will it impact them moving forward?

Wow, that’s a lot! And I’ll say that just because “the applicant” may fear any of these realities, it doesn’t mean this is actually how colleagues will behave or how the hiring experience will unfold. Here are the mindsets I encourage in my clients who are applying for internal promotions:

  1. Humility will not get you hired! Don’t be afraid to share your wins and strengths on your resume or in interview answers, even if you know every member of the hiring committee and you a) think they already know and so it’s redundant to be explicit or b) they’ll judge you for “thinking highly of yourself.” If you don’t advocate for yourself, who will?
  2. Put your best foot forward. Yes, even if you’re the front runner and the hiring manager is your current manager and mentor, and you know you’re the most qualified candidate, still invest time and energy into prepping your interview answers and application materials. I’ll never forget the time I saw a member of executive leadership give internal candidates this feedback after they submitted applications with outdated resumes and weak essays.
  3. Mind your own business. Look, you can’t control if other people judge your “ambition” or question your qualifications. That’s their own insecurity and drama. Worry about yourself and what you can control.

It can feel bold to share your ambitions for leadership with those you interact with daily. You may also find that you’re surrounded by words of encouragement and support! Don’t let fears about what colleagues may think get in the way of your exploring internal promotions.
