Many hiring managers may be steered toward making hiring decisions based on gut feelings -- often more costly and time-consuming than data-driven approaches. This guide covers the metrics that actually matter, from offer acceptance rates to time-to-hire ratios, helping you make confident decisions that lead to better hires and happier teams.

Latest research cuts through the noise: the hiring challenge isn't about skills- it's about experience. When 66% of new hires arrive unprepared yet 61% of employers keep raising experience bars, forward-thinking organizations are turning to data-driven approaches that evaluate the whole person, not just years on a resume.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
How can I tell if an opportunity is shady?
|
|
|
Occasionally, my phone will chime with a text from random phone numbers inviting me to an interview or a too-good-to-be true professional opportunity. All I have to do is click on some links and this great opportunity could be mine! Here’s the thing - I haven’t applied to any jobs nor do I work in any of the industries referenced in the texts. The scammers are out there scamming. The scams can range from links with viruses, to accessing sensitive information (to steal identities or money), and more.
I’m not the only one receiving texts, LinkedIn messages, or emails. Bad actors are preying on job seekers, many who’ve spent months without an interview and are anxiously waiting for positive feedback from employers.
Here are some look-fors if an opportunity feels off, especially as the scams have become more sophisticated in their approach and attention-to-detail:
- The recruiter sends a legitimate sounding email/LinkedIn message, but writes you from a gmail/hotmail/yahoo/aol email versus the employer/recruiting company domain
- A recruiter tells you you’re amazing and they want to present you to employers for opportunities, but before they can send your resume to a hiring manager they need to update it first (and you need to pay them for this service)
- You receive a job offer, but are asked to purchase your own equipment and then you’ll be reimbursed (after you send your bank info)
- The person who reaches out to you has no LinkedIn connections or they are new to the platform
- You’re contacted about a role that pays $$$, but the position itself isn’t that senior or highly technical and/or you aren’t actually that qualified and the level of the recruiter’s interest doesn’t match your actual qualifications
- The recruiter sends you a vague job description and continues to be vague during interviews and emails
- You’re asked to make decisions about whether or not you’ll move forward in an arbitrarily rushed manner (i.e. “you have 24 hours to accept/decline a job”). This alone is not a flag as recruiter and hiring managers may want to move quickly when they have a large pool and an ideal start date, but can be a flag when coupled with other items on this list.
- All the messages have a very AI-specific tone. A little too polished. A little too upbeat and polite. Not authentic-sounding.
For now, the scamming feels concentrated in industries outside of education and nonprofits, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t fishy/fishing opportunities in our orbit. That being said, there are still many employers and recruiters who are excited to connect with you about real, exciting opportunities!
