How can you network with people in a new field if you don’t currently have connections in that field?

When making a career pivot, especially one involving switching industries, networking is one of the most effective tools in your job seeking toolkit. But what if you don’t have any personal connections to professionals in this new industry? Here are my tips:

  • Leverage Linkedin. Conduct searches for professionals with your dream job titles, or follow company pages and identify people involved with recruiting or working in your desired field. Send them a personalized connection request!
  • Ask people you know if they know anyone in your field, even if it’s a distant connection. It could be as simple as sharing with friends, colleagues, members of your religious community, etc., that you’re thinking about transitioning to a new industry and asking if they know of anyone working in those fields. Better yet, ask if they can make personalized introductions via email, text, or LinkedIn!
  • If you went to community college, university, trade school, or graduate school, connect with your alma mater’s career service office. They exist to connect students and alumni to great careers! Ask them if they work with recruiters in your desired sector and if they can make an introduction or if they’re aware of fellow alumni with experience in that industry.
  • Fellowships and Programs like Americorps, City Year, Teach For America, Peace Corps, and many others also dedicate resources and staff to help their alumni navigate the post-program career landscape. Reach out to their team and ask if they are aware of opportunities, recruiters, or alumni in your desired industry.
