Are You Potentially Discounting Candidates Due To Their Age?

Whether intentional or not, age-related biases can be present in the recruiting process. That being said, ageism comes with a plethora of consequences an organization leader would want to avoid. Using AI in your job search

Lately, my family and I have been making our home “smarter,” using products we can activate with our voice or settings to control the temperature, the door locks, and play our favorite songs. Many job seekers are leveraging AI to make their job-search smarter as well. One of the newest tools on the market is ChatGPT, where, with the right prompts, the code can help you analyze job descriptions, write cover letters, and optimize your resume. As a career coach, I think ChatGPT can quickly provide a job-seeker with quick, interesting insights on how to market themselves externally in an increasingly competitive market.

Here are some prompts to try out:

  • “Can you distill the top skills in this job description?”
  • “What roles am I qualified for based on the content in my resume?”
  • “What questions can I expect in an interview based on this job description?”
  • “I am going to send you a job description and resume. Can you optimize my resume for this job?”

I would caution any job-seeker from relying entirely on a tool like ChatGPT - you might find yourself submitting identical cover letters to your fellow applicants or missing out on nuances that are critical to standing out in the hiring process. Think of this as one tool, among many, in your job-seeking toolkit. And have some fun - my team and I did when we played around with prompts last week!
