Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Navigating hiring timelines when job-searching this summer
|
|
|
Navigating a job search this summer? You may encounter extremes of hiring timelines - ones that are prolonged while hiring teams take vacation, and others that are accelerated to ensure the position is closed before the new school year.
In general, operate with grace and empathy given that hiring teams may be missing key staff members who are typically involved in the hiring process, and therefore application reviews, interviews, and decisions may be delayed or you may find a lack of alignment regarding the role and/or process based on who you speak to.
With this in mind, here is some advice:
- Ask the recruiter or hiring manager for clarity about the process timeline and expected communication in advance, so you can plan accordingly. This is especially helpful so that if an anticipated part of the process doesn’t happen by the time communicated, you can gently follow-up. Sample language: “I hope you’re doing well since we last connected. You shared I could expect an update regarding next steps in the process by [insert date]. I’m still very interested in the role - can you provide an update on my status or a new timeline so that I may plan accordingly?”
- Boundaries are so critical, as is time to recharge from work or the grueling job-search process, but consider the ramifications of not checking email daily given that a process may move quickly and not wait around for you to respond to an email a week later.
- Summer dress codes are pretty lax at many organizations, and for many folks trying to beat the heat. Business casual is still your best bet before an in-person interview, but if you’re nervous about being over or under dressed it’s ok to double check prior to your interview day.
May those involved with recruiting and hiring return your emails in a timely manner and provide you with grace and empathy as well!
