Making The Case For Your Professional Development

Are you comfortable pitching an idea to your boss for a professional development opportunity? Whether it’s time off to enroll on an executive-education program or funding for an online course, it’s not always easy to “make the ask.” That being said, there are a few things you can consider in order to improve your odds of succeeding.

How to Approach Applying For A Job When The Salary Isn’t Posted.

Your time is so limited. Is it even worth it to apply for a job if the salary isn’t posted? What if, after a series of interviews and performance tasks, the company can’t meet your salary requirements? This is the question so many of my clients are asking me these days.

More and more job seekers are expecting salary transparency in the hiring process, starting with the job description, and more and more organizations are taking note. Salary transparency is an important move in reducing wage gaps and creating more equity in org-wide compensation decisions.

If you see a great job posted and the salary is not included, here are a couple of paths you can take:

  • You can choose to only apply to roles once you know the salary, either from the job description or by asking the job poster/hiring manager/recruiter. You can use language like this: “Dear [insert their name], I have been a fan of [insert name of company] for quite some time and was excited to come across your newly posted [insert job posting title] opening. I didn’t see it listed on the job description - can you please provide the salary range for the opportunity? Thank you.” If you are very excited about the position, and don’t hear back, you might still consider applying so that you don’t miss the opportunity to be considered if it truly is a dream role for you.
  • You can apply without knowing the salary and expect to discuss it in your first phone call with a recruiter/hiring manager. They will either ask you what your salary requirements are, or proactively share the salary with you. If you don’t feel comfortable sharing your salary requirements (for fear that you’ll say something too low or too high), use language like this: “Can you share with me your budgeted salary range for the role? I didn’t see it listed on the job description, and knowing it will allow me to provide an informed answer.” Your biggest risk here is finding out that the salary offered is misaligned with your requirements after you have already taken the time to apply and prepare for an interview.

If you do find out that the salary for a role is misaligned with your requirements AFTER applying, don’t fret. The recruiter or hiring manager will likely be able to direct you to higher paying roles within the organization for which you qualify.
