Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
If you’re a long-time reader, you know I write about LinkedIn quite a bit. In both my career corners and in career coaching consultations, I often share best practices for crafting a compelling LinkedIn headline which concisely communicates your job function and value proposition. A strong LinkedIn profile which is rich in key-words, especially for your target roles, also ensures you show up in recruiter searches. A client, who is currently teaching but aspires to school leadership, asked if that meant changing her headline to “Assistant Principal”. Here’s the guidance I shared:

A strong headline can bridge the gap between your current role and target roles. The key is to find a through line between your passions and skills which align with more senior positions. For example, as a teacher you may also do some curriculum writing, sit on a few leadership committees or mentor other teachers, and engage in data analysis. With that in mind, a sample headline might read:
Teacher Leader @ Name of Campus | Pursuing equity and culturally responsive instruction through curriculum design, new teacher mentoring, and professional learning
This headline focuses less on the work of a teacher (the subject they teach, lesson planning, grading, etc.) and more on their transferable skills/experience that might be employed by an instructional leader.

They are looking for an experienced project manager to be their Deputy Director, Programs. The Deputy Director will work on the program team to support the planning and coordination of tasks, activities, and deliverables for major technical assistance programs. The Deputy Director will play a key role in project management, RFP development and vendor management, and program report writing and documentation. The ideal candidate has 5 years of project management experience with significant team and/or client management responsibility. They would also be knowledgable in school leadership, secondary and post-secondary education and its infrastructure and regulations.

This person possesses strong project management skills, along with experience with budget management. The position is based in Dallas, TX. Candidates must be willing to travel overnight (both in/out of state) up to 25% of the time

They are looking for an experienced project manager to be their Director, Governance and Compliance. The Director, Governance and Compliance will manage a team of ~3 direct reports as they lead both the organization’s Board of Directors-related work and its overall compliance strategy and execution. Both of these critical functions support Rocketship’s ability to operate as a high-performing national network of schools. This person will direct a variety of compliance-related projects related to compliance challenges, reviews, or updates.
The ideal candidate has 6+ years of work experience in roles that include systems-building and project management components. This person is also has experience leading and managing staff members, with experience working in/with schools ideally. In the absence of this, an eagerness to dive right in and spend time in Rocketship schools to understand their operations would be critical.
This person will work in person from the Rocketship office in Redwood City multiple days per week, and also from the Rocketship office in San Jose regularly.
