Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

“I’m qualified AND I was referred! Why am I still job-searching???”

“I’m qualified AND I was referred by a current employee! Why am I STILL not getting interviews???” I see some version of this status update on my LinkedIn feed every day. Going through the job-seeking process is a time consuming experience that can make you question everything you know and value about yourself. I’ve personally been there. Many clients come to me because they’re struggling to land a job for the first time in their professional lives, and the strategies that worked before simply aren’t cutting it.
Here’s the thing - you can meet 100% of the requirements on a job description, personally know people working at an employer who personally refer you to hiring managers, and still be passed up for interviews. That is so frustrating and demoralizing. Here’s what might be happening behind the scenes:
- You were one of MANY qualified, referred applicants. Recruiters and hiring managers don’t have an infinite capacity to interview - instead, they review applicants (usually starting with the candidates who applied first) and select the strongest of the pool.
- You submitted an application late in the game, when the hiring team was already interviewing qualified candidates. Sometimes, there’s no way to avoid this - you only just saw a job posting that had already been up for several weeks. Other times, perfectionism can get in the way of submitting your materials. I always encourage candidates to work as quickly as possible to apply to target roles. Keep your resume updated and a folder where you store previously used cover letters (in case they are required in the application) so you can easily tailor for new positions.
- Your application isn’t as explicit as you think it is in sharing your qualifications and impact. Make sure you are clearly including all certifications, relevant degrees, technical skills, the scope of your work, impact, and years of experience. I spend a lot of time updating resumes with my incredibly accomplished clients because they didn’t realize how much information they should be including regarding their technical expertise and the scope of their work.
- The quality of the referral is lacking. Sometimes, I get messages from people I don’t actually know asking me to refer them to roles with my previous employers. If I can’t speak about your experience, skill-set, values, or our working relationship, my referral will have zero weight. When asking someone to refer you to a role, reach out to people you actually know, and who are connected to the hiring team in some way (because they work on that team or their work streams sometimes cross).
